Jan De Vylder has been systematically repainting De Standaard Magazine with white paint every week for quite some time. He then hangs the magazine to dry on the laundry rack. Posture Editions assembled a selection from the more than 1,000 overpaintings for the book ‘ZONDAG SCHILDER MAGAZINE’. The spreads from the magazines play with the hidden or obscured, encouraging the viewer to look for the subtle differences within the almost nothing.
The act of repainting can be read as a response to today's confusion between culture and consumption, but also acts as a counterbalance to architecture. “I draw. And craft. And paint. PART-TIME AMATEUR TOURIST as background.”
In his text PAINTINGS ON A MAGAZINE, De Vylder gives an insight in his architectural practice and view of life via ordering, space, construction, technique, material, craftsman, beauty, desire and of course—Elsworth Kelly. Add on / take away.
