Film Screening: City Dreamers

In his 2018 documentary film City Dreamers Canadian director Joseph Hillel reflects on our changing urban environment through the lens of four women architects, inspiring trailblazers who marked history by working, observing, and thinking about the transformations that are shaping the city of today and tomorrow. Building on Hillel’s film, architectural historian and curator Léa-Catherine Szacka is preparing the exhibition Crossed Histories: The Women who built the Postmodern City to be presented at the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris from February to May 2025. During this film screening and discussion, Szacka will discuss the agency of professional women - intellectuals, operating with tools that expanded the traditional role of the architect by including other activities such as critical writing, curating and institution building to advocacy planning and political actions - on the city after the Modern Movement.

Léa-Catherine Szacka is Senior lecturer (Associate Professor) in Architectural Studies at the University of Manchester and visiting tutor at the Berlage. Her research focuses on the history of architecture exhibitions and the history and theory of postmodern architecture,. She is the author of Exhibiting the Postmodern: The 1980 Venice Architecture Biennale (2016), for which she was awarded the 2017 SAHGB Alice Davis Hitchcock Medallion and of Biennials/Triennials: Conversations on the Geography of Itinerant Display (2019). She is also co-author of Le Concert: Pink Floyd à Venise (2017) and Paolo Portoghesi: Architecture between History,Politics and Media (2023) as well as co-editor of Mediated Messages: Periodicals, Exhibitions and the Shaping of Postmodern Architecture (2018) and Concrete Oslo (2018). In 2022, Szacka co-curated the 10th International Architecture Biennale of Rotterdam, It’s About Time.
