Why playgrounds in Japan ? After importing the playground model after the Kanto earthquake in 1923, Japan became, without a doubt, the country with the most important number of playgrounds. How to understand the persistence of this immutable yet outdated device and how to explain the transformations it experienced there? As we go through the history of Japan's playgrounds, and look at some of its most remarkable occurrences, it will occur that, more than being part of a country's and a culture's history, playgrounds in Japan also tell us a great deal about our relationship to children's play.
