First opened by Pierre Leguillon in Paris in 2007 at the invitation of 'architecturespossibles' (Christian and Pascale Pottgiesser), 'La Promesse de l'écran' is a mobile device, equal parts projection and performance, which has taken on multiple forms by adapting to a wide variety of architecture, both public and private. In the framework of the 'Institution Building' exhibition, and more specifically its fourth chapter 'Agency', 'La Promesse de l'écran' presents 'La Promessede l'architecture'.
In 'La Promesse de l'écran', the collective and convivial character of the projection ritual is constantly re-enacted. The sessions are devoted to peripheral aspects of cinema: credits, posters, recurring motifs, etc., otherwise watching the screen from the vantage points of other media: painting, drawing, poetry, music...
Produced at the initiative of CAPC, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Bordeaux, 'La Promesse de l'architecture' was first screened during the summer of 2009 at the Maison Lemoine, designed by Rem Koolhaas in Floirac. It was also shown in June 2010, to mark the end of construction for another private house built by Christian and Pascale Pottgiesser (architecturespossibles) in Louveciennes, near Paris. It was then screened in the grand foyer of the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, with breathtaking views of the Eiffel Tower (October 2011), then on the terrace of the Beirut Art Center (June 2015), and finally in the Temple de la Fusterie in Geneva (June 2017), a Protestant church.
The editing of 'La Promesse de l’architecture' weaves together dozens of sequences shot in or depicting remarkable architecture, primarily from the modernist period. It is an imaginary city that we roam on screen, with real buildings or constructed sets. Its architects are Michelangelo Antonioni, Jacques Tati, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Oscar Niemeyer, Jean-Luc Godard, Fritz Lang, Bertrand Blier, Man Ray, and Frank Lloyd Wright.
