Part of Brussels since 1921, the former village of Laeken has undergone exceptional urban development over the last century. Redeveloped for the 1935 World Fair, the Heysel Plateau and Osseghem Park became important centres of interest and leisure, while numerous residential neighbourhoods were built around the exhibition centres in the interwar period, many of which in the Art Deco style.
Starting at the former Laeken town hall, travel along the façades representative of this unmistakable trend in Brussels. Explore this area dotted with parks and public gardens, also rich in interwar developments, and discover some hidden gems on Rue Mont Saint-Alban or Rue Ernest Salu. Then, cycle uphill to the exhibition centres before descending back to the suburb’s narrow streets.
