Andrea Kahn. Site matters: thinking the anthropocene

The concept of ‘site’ is fundamental to landscape, architecture, urban planning, and design. In 2005 educator, scholar, and design practitioner Andrea Kahn, together with Carol J. Burns edited the pioneering publication Site Matters. Design Concepts, Histories and Strategies, which took a multidisciplinary approach to site thinking. The book became a pivotal reference within landscape architecture discourse.

The 2020 re-edition of Site Matters: Strategies for Uncertainty through Planning and Design strives to address the increasingly complex hybridity of constructed environments demanding new tools for thinking about and working with site. Reaching across design disciplines, this edition assembles essays from landscape architects, urban designers, architects, planners, historians, and artists.

In this talk, Andrea  will discuss the book’s main concepts and arguments, outlining its various perspectives on reading and writing sites in the Anthropocene. It will be organized as a presentation followed by a moderated discussion.
