This modest but radical design blends architecture and landscape in a processional flow of spaces that reveals a deep understanding of both the fundamental aspects of and changing attitudes towards death, burial and the journey of life. In the absence of explicit religious symbols, the universal power of nature replaces the sacral, and Romantic notions of seeking meaning in rediscovered nature are examined. In doing so, Statie Stuifduin goes beyond the specifics of the building to explore new visions of what contemporary funeral architecture can be.
