Stephen Bates, the co-founder of Sergison Bates architects, is behind a large number of buildings that have gained international recognition. Today running offices in London and Zurich, the practice has realized projects ranging from housing to care homes, from educational and cultural institutions to urban-scale regeneration design – and, as part of Atelier Kanal, currently transforms the former Citroen garage into the new KANAL-Centre Pompidou. Focusing on the notions of Figures, Doors, and Passages the talk gives an overview of the practice’s trajectory and recent work.

Bates graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1989 and established Sergison Bates with Jonathan Sergison in 1996. He taught at the AA in London and was Visiting Professor at ETH Zurich, EPF Lausanne, University of Antwerp and at the Harvard GSD. Since 2009, he has been Professor of Urbanism and Housing at the Technical University of Munich.
